Children within our home base groups were asked to write to their educators, sharing their thoughts on what we have done so far. It was interesting to read their honest reflections and the most frequent references made to highlights were: read and feed; making new friends;awesome space; mandala prayers and fitness. The low lights students shared were significantly: too much noise; untidy room; people pushing and shoving; rude people...especially people talking while someone else is talking.
And for the educators...It has become apparent that listening to and following simple instructions is proving to be rather challenging for a significant number of children in our space. Our team have discussed this and decided to take a closer look. We have implemented focused listening/concentration tasks over the last three days, in order to assess children's individual responses and to develop increased concentration. We may also have to look closer at ourselves and ensure that we are providing clear steps with instructions and encourage children to be increasingly accountable for their actions. It is evident that when some children have had the opportunity to stay behind and work in a smaller group to seek clarity with an instruction/task they have made a choice to move off and work independently without knowing what they are expected to do! These children require extra guidance to discuss what best benefits them.
A highlight for me personally is the positive vibe within the environment, the many new relationships that are flourishing daily....and the questions that have already been answered through many of the experiences we have already had.
There are, however, still many questions....and I see this as a positive. A learning journey surely requires ongoing concerns, care and questions!
