Reflecting on Changes in Technology

Technological changes have been astounding in our lifetime. These changes have lead to increased options for sharing. At a recent staff meeting we completed a task pictured below, where we had to place various technological items on a timeline. What was initially obvious was the amount of new items that have been introduced in a short period of time compared with the large gap in time where limited new items have been introduced.

This made me stop and contemplate how these changes have affected our lives. I recall being intrigued with taking photos when I was younger. Enjoying the excitement and anticipation of capturing a film full of moments only to have to wait to take the film to be processed and then sometimes being disappointed that what I'd thought I'd captured had a big thumb print shadowing the quality of the picture. Today we have an immediate photo available to us when we take it. One that we can quickly share not just with those near us but with people far away due to technological developments and various platforms. This increases our connectivity with others in relation to sharing and receiving feedback, however it also comes with a level of responsibility and accountability. Therefore our role is to inform and educate students of these responsibilities so they are best prepared  for the future.

Technological changes are viewed as achievements. Advances that have become significantly important in our daily lives. We need to move forward carefully considering the platforms we share on and what we are actually sharing. Our challenge is to find the best ways to do this while ensuring balance and embracing the many changes we have yet to come!
