Computational thinking involves solving problems and designing systems that steer towards a solution. This is a core part of what we do in our schools. Fundamentally we are trying to best prepare students for their futures.We once spent days waiting and searching to locate information. This is now a split second away due to an algorithm search through google.
Scratch is a great way of students being able to visualise computational thinking. Scratch helps students learn how to programme. Students need to be participating in teacher led activities to develop, manipulate, store, retrieve and share digital content in order to meet technological challenges.
My mind boggles when I think of technological changes over time. Google drive enables us to save our work when we haven't even requested that it does. Many monotonous jobs are now completed by machines. Replacing humans with robots has enabled some businesses to save money, in some cases incur less error and even be exposed to less danger. Because robots minimise monotonous tasks the interesting jobs are now left for humans.
We now need to focus on innovation in our schools. Designing and creating digital outcomes is where things start to get creative and this is what kids can really enjoy. The following blog post suggests how to teach computational thinking. It also highlights the significance of computational thinking in our futures. If success involves doing computational thinking well in various fields then it is important that we carefully teach our students the skills they need to succeed.
