As a team the teachers in Tumu have worked together to establish the following question for this year's
inquiry: How can we best use individual student progressions to improve student outcomes?
inquiry: How can we best use individual student progressions to improve student outcomes?
We have considered Student agency and wondered how are we going to do this? We have considered
giving students a copy of progressions and have thought about the possibility of them being able to group
themselves. Our wonder is around students looking at their own needs and how we can we improve student outcomes in writing.
giving students a copy of progressions and have thought about the possibility of them being able to group

What we are noticing:
- Generally in our observations it appears to be a concern for a larger amount of students.
- There is a lack of some basic aspects of writing, such as tense, punctuation.
- 83% are at or above for our Year 5’s
- 82% are at or above for our Year 6’s
Our e-asTTle appears to show around half of our Year 6’s are not meeting the expected standard. E-asTTle does not agree with EOY data. Sometimes we think there is a lack of care coming from the students and some writing behaviours simply come down to careless actions. When there is an audience there is a slightly higher level of accountability.
What we already know:
- Students are enjoying writing. Therefore engagement isn’t a priority.
- We know this because the children love silent writing. It is more organic. Silent writing is good for fluency and engagement however our data tells us that what is currently being done is not having enough impact on improved quality of students' writing.
- We enjoy teaching writing and there are some good quality writers in this hub.
- Girls in this year's hub show they are eager for feedback, Of the boys - many are easily distracted.
- We need to find out what their gaps are and let them know this so that they can self monitor and plan their own next steps.
- Reading is great and orally they are fantastic, seem to be unable to transfer knowledge.
