TUMU DAY OUT- To assist our PBL

As part of our PBL this term our Driving Question is:
How can a building be the heart of the community?

Our team has organised students into specific PBL groups where they have to work collaboratively through a variety of tasks in order to achieve a final product:
A presentation to the school and parent community of a model or design of a community building.

We have scaffolded students, so far, by providing them with specific research workshops and have given them a variety of co-operative challenges that continue to support them on their individual learning journey's and assist them to develop skills to work well collectively.

We have recently focused on gathering information and organised a day out for the entire hub. Each student had to choose one of 4 places to visit ( Core Education, Imagination Station, Biz Dojo and Hillview School) to collate information that they took back to their assigned PBL group. This information was thought to support their planning and provide them with ideas that would contribute to their final product .

The day out was thoroughly enjoyed by students. Some highlights:
            The fact that students had agency.
            The activities were interesting and related to the bigger picture...PBL
            Everyone was able to gather at Margaret Mahy playground for a shared lunch, fun play and      some challenging team building tasks.
            As a follow up to the visit, students gathered in their original PBL groups and shared their findings.

It was wonderful to witness much engagement in discussions and enthusiasm from various experiences.We were also fortunate to have some wonderful parents helpers who positively commented on the details of what we were doing and were pleasantly surprised by the interest and level of learning that resulted from Tumu's Day Out!

Our next steps are to design further workshops to support students as they work towards their presentation and to continue asking open questions and design tasks that encourage students to develop a higher level of thinking and motivation to achieve optimal success within their PBL groups and with their presentations.
