Today we embark on the 7th day of DFI and our focus is Media. We explored live steaming, dived deeper into Manaiakalani pedagogy and looked at creative ways to use slides and google drawings.

Live Streaming Youtube

We looked at live streaming and discussed how we could take the sharing of our kids work and what they’re passionate about even further. Kent, our guest speaker from Pt England shared with us live streams of his school's polyfest, cross country, and sports games.
As a school staff Pt England have tried to ramp up and promote what their students are doing. Kent discussed some of the following points

• the importance of using a full HD camera for this task.
• Youtube is easier to use from a storage perspective. 
• Youtube has a copy forever. 
• It takes you straight to a source you can easily manipulate.
• You can get an app for ipads and start adding in commentary now.
• You can also use your laptop web cam or a drone, if your school has one.
• Currently there are only guidelines around the use of drones, not rules, aside from those around planes. 
• Enrolment process at Pt England school covers use of pictures which is an important protection for students.
• Drones can be coded. Sensors won’t allow them to fly into people and  trees.
• DJI flight app enables you to fly the drone.

Connected

In our hang out with Dorothy Burt we discussed Connectivity. Prior to being connected Dorothy recalls the schools being disconnected. Even though she enjoys competition she views that that competition shouldn’t be the only times we come together . Our focus should be about being connected and celebrating our diversity. In 2015 more schools joined clusters and they were named Manaiakalani outreach. This has meant a commitment. Manaiakalani provides ongoing support. We keep coming back to the one thing that connects Manaiakalani and this is the learn, create, share model. This language and model is what's paramount. Blogging enabled a platform for sharing. To bring together innovation and celebrate learning. The end goal which is celebrating our children. What digital does is turbo charge and make possible the impossible. While face to face interactions and learning is the ideal, we are fortunate that we have this digital addition. In bringing together the learn, create, share model we are empowering our students to also be empowered. We are providing those who live local to learn in a global platform. Manaiakalani identify the reciprocal relationship with connected teachers and the many benefits of this relationship. As part of this relationship the momentum of blogging is increasing between those that are part of this group. We need to remember the importance of tapping into google groups and google community to get information out across other schools, rather than simply focus on just our own. There is value in being proactive and encouraging parents to comment on students blogs. Blogs are being pushed as they are evidence based. 

If a student is motivated to write because of an audience that goes beyond teacher expectations and becomes more of an intrinsic motivation.

The significance of a Cluster website is important for connecting people and bringing them together.

Through DFI, I have continued to learn skills that improve my confidence, capability and

workflow as a professional and provide me with skills that could be used with my learners. If we take kids on a camp we fill out rams forms. We need to think the of the same proactivity around safety when setting up blogs and remember that students are only the author’s of blogs. Schools/ Teachers are the owners.
