Meaning:
What does this mean for your students?
Focused attention from educators. Target groups to address specific gaps in learning. Modeling of what focused work should look like that transfers to others in space. Students and educators working together to establish environment that benefits optimal learning and enjoyment of those working in space.
What is this activity reflecting about your own teaching style?
I like to relate what I teach to real life situations as this seems to engage students more. Also I consider achieving success in maths to be fun and like to share this passion with students. Working with students to establish how we utilise our space is appreciated by students, however we still need to overcome issue with working noise and on task expectations.
Lateral Links:
How does this activity link to research?
We reflected on Gina Holland’s Research:Focus engaging boys through boy friendly teaching and learning practices/strategies.Her research links to our overall focus of how we want boys to be motivated within our collaborative environment, how we can enhance learning and how we want our teaching practice to develop through use of specific strategies. Particular focus was given to identity, learning and relationships that boys experience.
What do you need to do next time to improve the process and/or outcomes for students?
Ensure group boxes are more focused to meet specific needs. Cater for variety of learning styles. Possibly look closer at learning styles of target students and cater to these needs.
Existing Data:
What ways have you used to access teaching beliefs and practices of others to inform your own inquiry?
Working collaboratively with members of my Year 5 & 6 team.
Validation:
What would you see and hear to know this was effective?
Students engaged in a variety of mathematical problems who are confident and capable in their application of strategies. Students who are relating what they have learned to real life contexts and transferring this passion beyond school lessons….sharing what they have learned at home or with other students in school.
Compulsory questions:
What might be?
Increased engagement through ICT and hands on learning including use of materials. Improved self regulation. Shared responsibility among educators. Flexible groupings: we should expect movement. Students experiencing their own levels of success.
What comes next?
Accountability for completion of follow up work. Establishing some form of school support with this could be beneficial...e.g a work and study style lunchtime group where students who haven’t utilised their time well in class are given allocated times to complete work.
Group boxes for children who have finished their follow up work.
Reviewing the self analysis comments students have shared and considering what they suggest next steps are.
Discussing ways we could bring positive male role models into our learning environment to motivate the boys target group.
Wow - you don't muck around - thanks for putting all of this onto your blog! I enjoyed listening to you present your inquiry. You show a real depth of knowledge about the learners in your hub. I am very interested to see what will engage these learners more fully in their learning as this is part of what I am inquiring into as well. I would like to trial my PBL project plan in your team with a group sometime as I am interested to see how well this approach would engage your learners as well.
