Shaping our Team Inquiry Question

Our focus question for our team inquiry is : How can we improve the engagement of Year 5 & 6 boys in mathematics learning to improve student outcomes within the collaborative environment.

We noticed that: We have a high number of boys that seek attention through inappropriate and off task behaviours in our team, some who simply don’t have knowledge or comprehend what they are doing, some who don’t engage and others who are capable but avoid applying themselves. Results from PAT’s and step up tests showed concern in relation to the number of  students who scored low. We wanted to improve attitudes towards learning and encourage all students to improve their learning and behaviour in particular the boys.

Our challenge is: The new environment and how students can best work within the spaces to achieve optimal success as well as how educators, peers and parents can best support this.

What isn’t working that usually works or hasn’t ever engaged these learners? Working within set times limits to ensure all groups are given appropriate time for learning and  are supported fairly. Children aren’t always making good independent choices about where they work best and with whom. Accountability for completion of follow up work, especially for students who aren’t able to manage their time well and to assist children to avoid distractions.

SHAPING INQUIRY QUESTION
How can I have an impact on …Raising students abilities to self manage. Improve engagement and students outcomes. What can I change in my practice that will result in …Better academic results.
As a team we looking at establishing timetable templates for children to record where they should be and what they should be doing to support and scaffold exactly what they are expected to be doing. Implemented a student survey incorporating some form of continuum , emoji, rating. Establishing an improved attitude to completing tasks, where students take risks and give tasks a go rather than withdraw from tasks.
